What to look for in a SEO expert company selling their Search Engine Optimization and SEM services 2016

I guess like most business owners, I receive lots of emails offering to help ME with my own SEO, and this one got through my tight spam-filter because they actually went to the effort of filling out the form on my website, so I thought I would check them out and talk you through a little of the thought-process en-route.

It does fascinate me that someone selling SEO services would actually approach another SEO company… Personally I can never see the merit in helping my competitors achieve higher rankings than my own business, but then so far 100% of the approaches I’ve received have been from companies who are less successful than their own competitors at getting noticed on the First Page of Google, and it’s easy to see why.

 

Personally, I generated my First Income Online two years before Google even started, and I’ve NEVER been adversely affected by any of their updates designed to weed out the chaff… and the reason for this, is that I’ve always been fascinated by the algorithms, and to me it always makes perfect sense…
If you think about it all logically from the point of view that Google is essentially a piece of software analysing millions of web content, including; webpages, images, videos, news items, publicity, blog posts, maps, reviews, testimonials, updates and amendments, Press Releases etc etc – Google is not just a bunch of employees randomly checking content, but it IS a clever algorithm that tries to take into account as many variables as possible, and put some weighting to the importance of each eg. is the page title more important than the number of Social shares?

If you were responsible for programming the Google algorithm, how would you choose to rank and rate the importance and hierarchy of each factor?  eg. is the length of time a visitor stays on the page as important as those that click to a link as a result?  and is a hyperlink to an internal page or post as important (or more important) than an external site link? and should the relevance or authority of that external site be a factor?  (how long they’ve been established, how many posts they have, is this the same niche or generic such as facebook) etc.
If all of these factors are important, then what percentage weighting would you attribute to each?

Ultimately Google want to ensure that they are still the number one search engine of choice for online businesses as well as offline businesses, but if we type into a browser search “Cafe Princes Street Edinburgh” and the first three results are for Cafes which are no longer in business, you would soon stop using that Search Engine… so logically-thinking, how can a piece of software establish if a business owner is still actively seeking business in that same niche?

Now it’s true that the majority of websites don’t change their Home page, or the ‘about us’ or ‘contact’ or ‘location’ or even ‘Terms and Conditions’, ‘FAQs’ or ‘Profile’ images etc, so how does Google software know that you’re still actively in business and seeking to attract new custom?

The ‘logical’ answer is that there actually a number of key indicators that can help…
